Your personal English-speaking RomeCabs Driver will pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in Rome at 8:30 AM for your fun-filled Orvieto wine tasting tour from Rome.
Your morning will begin with a scenic drive traversing the beautiful countryside into the heart of Umbria towards the Orvieto region which is well regarded for its fine wines. This unique terroir is defined by its sandy clay soil, limestone, and marine fossils from the prehistoric Pliocene era millions of years ago when this land was once covered by the sea lending the wines their vibrant taste, complexity, and structure.
To discover wine you must also understand its roots, its ecosystem, and the people. The history of wine is closely tied to the ancient Etruscans: the highly advanced pre-Roman civilization that thrived in this region from the 8th century BCE to the 3rd-2nd centuries BCE. These enigmatic Etruscans introduced winemaking and grape cultivation, carving out primitive “wine cellars” into the tuffaceous rock for their wine production which grew into a flourishing trade. This ancient tradition is witnessed on the estate by ancient caves and vine graftings, both part of the Etruscan viticulture history.
Scenic country roads that weave through undulating hills whose slopes boast rows of vineyards and olive orchards take you to a tranquil winery estate. Situated up high on the crest of a hill surrounded by picturesque Umbrian and Tuscan landscapes, this winery estate is an ideal sanctuary for the soul far away from civilization and very close to nature.
During your visit to this winery, you will delight in a 1.5-hour journey through the history of this certified organic winery as you learn from the family of winemakers the traditional process of winemaking and savor a selection of three locally produced wines accompanied by bruschetta, locally sourced charcuterie, cheese, and organic extra virgin olive oil.
With every sip of wine, you can taste the history that culminates in the flavors of the authentic local wines celebrated today. Raise a glass to your unforgettable sojourn to this winery perfectly set in the idyllic Umbrian hills.
Don’t miss the occasion to shop the winery’s offerings for your preferred bottle of wine or purchase locally produced olive oil that will be sure to enhance your Mediterranean dishes back home.
At the conclusion of your winery visit, you will join your driver for a 30-minute drive along scenic windy country roads to Orvieto for a tasty lunch and sightseeing.
Dramatically settled on the summit of a large volcanic tufa rock, Orvieto overlooks the beguiling Umbrian countryside comprised of vineyards, olive orchards, cypress trees, and dense forests. Orvieto is also an ancient town of Etruscan origins, delighting visitors with its charming and well-preserved medieval setting.
While in Orvieto, relish a glorious lunch savoring specialties of the Umbrian region at a local restaurant of your choice. After lunch, appreciate time on your own for a stroll along wide pedestrian-friendly streets lined with inviting shops brimming with stunning hand-crafted and hand-painted ceramics, various gastronomic boutiques and cafes. Throughout Orvieto, you will also find wine shops (enoteche ) that offer additional wine tasting opportunities and sell a variety of local wines.
Not to be missed in Orvieto is the late 13th century Gothic Cathedral of Orvieto, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. It took 30 years to plan the cathedral and 300 years to reach its current splendor. The cathedral’s splendent seven-story facade is bejeweled with mosaics that shimmer in the afternoon sunlight, decorated with dark green and white marble stripes and carvings, and adorned with niches that frame life-size sculpted figures.
Dramatic frescoes have transformed the cathedral into a museum that boasts a treasure trove of masterpieces by famous artists of that time such as Luca Signorelli and Fra Angelico.
After lunch and sightseeing in Orvieto, at approximately 4:00 PM, you will depart back to your accommodation in Rome aiming to arrive by approximately 5:45 PM. You will enjoy a relaxing drive reminiscing the exquisite sights and flavors you experienced on your exceptional wine tasting tour in Umbria.
