Description

On your way to your first destination you will pass by some interesting things in Rome, with the possibility of the famous ancient 1st century BC Roman Pyramid built for as a tomb for the Roman magistrate Caius Cestio. During this period of history Rome experienced an Egyptian influence that not only inspired the construction of pyramids, but also importing large obelisks that belonged to Pharaohs.

.

Colosseo (Rome in A Day Tour)

.

THE COLOSSEUM

.

Your first stop will be the Colosseum, the imposing iconic symbol of Rome and testament to its imperial magnificence.  You will have the opportunity to see what the Colosseum is like inside and the remains of the arena on which gladiatorial games, beast hunts, mock sea battles, theatrical plays, and public executions took place for 4 centuries for the enjoyment of up to 50,000 spectators at a time.

The Flavian Amphitheater (as the Colosseo was originally named) was built in 72 AD by Emperor Vespasian who belonged to the Flavian dynasty. The amphitheater was built over the previous Emperor Nero’s opulent and enormous private residence the Domus Aurea (Golden House).

.

The name of the Flavian Amphitheater eventually evolved to just the Colosseum due to the towering ancient bronze statue of Nero depicted as Apollo the pagan sun god that once stood in front of the amphitheater.

 .

Next to the Coliseum you will see famous Arch of Constantine, the ornate 4th century AD Victory Arch. Emperor Constantine is credited to legalizing Christianity in Rome.

.

Circus Maximus (Rome)

.

CIRCUS MAXIMUS

.

The Circus Maximus was the largest ancient Roman stadium ever built, primarily where dangerous chariot races took place for the pleasure of Roman citizens and royalty alike. On the spina (spine) in the center of the stadium that served as a dividing barrier, once stood Obelisco Flaminio, the obelisk that now graces the center of Piazza del Popolo.

Nothing but the outline remains of this Roman stadium, but you can imagine the grandeur of this structure that is considered an Ancient Roman wonder. The majestic backdrop behind the the Circus Maximus is Palatine Hill where the villas of the emperors and Rome’s elite overlooked the city below.

 .

From the terrace behind Capitol Hill (Campidoglio) you have a splendid picturesque view of the entire Roman Forum, a stunning portion of the Palatine Hill, and the Coliseum peering in the distance. This is also a very popular spot for great photos and group pictures, so make sure to bring your cameras!

.

Vittorio Emanuele II Monument, Pza Venezia (Rome in A Day Tour)

.

On your drive through Rome, will see nearby the great Piazza Venezia that gives prominence to the palatial monument dedicated to the first king of Unified Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II.

.

Completed in 1935, the monument was built of fine white marble, features grand stairways, lofty white Corinthian columns, elegantly sculpted fountains, a huge bronze equestrian sculpture of Vittorio Emanuele II in the center and two statues of the pagan goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas (a chariot drawn by four horses abreast).

.

The monument also contains the the tomb of the WWI unknown soldier with an eternal flame guarded around the clock by sentinels.

.

Pantheon (Rome in A Day Tour)

.

THE PANTHEON

.

The Pantheon the ancient Roman temple originally dedicated to all the Roman gods and to date considered the best preserved of all ancient Roman buildings, and the oldest standing domed structure in Rome in continuous use throughout its history.

.

The temple was eventually converted into a church and burial place for Italy’s royalty including King Umberto I and Queen Margherita,  King Vittorio Emanuele II, and the notable Renaissance artist Raphael.

 .

A unique feature of the Pantheon is the oculus (Latin for ‘eye’) in the center of the dome that has always been open to nature’s elements, allowing in sunshine to illuminate the interior and rain to fall to the floor.

.

On your Rome in A Day tour, you will have the opportunity to also visit 2 of Rome’s most famous squares: the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

.

.

Trevi Fountain, Rome

.

.

THE TREVI FOUNTAIN

.

The famous Trevi fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome and probably the most recognized in the world. Thousands of visitors follow tradition of throwing a coin into the fountain to ensure a return to Rome.

.

The Trevi fountain was also the setting of the classic movie Three Coins in a Fountain and Federico Fellini's famous film La Dolce Vita.

.

Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna) Rome

 .

SPANISH STEPS / PIAZZA DI SPANGA

.

The iconic Spanish Steps boasts an elegant 18th century winding stairway that takes you from the square below up to the French church of Trinita dei Monti.

.

The Obelisk Sallustiano at the top of the stairs is a smaller copy of the large original Egyptian obelisk that once belonged to Pharaoh Ramses II which is currently the centerpiece of Piazza del Popolo, and previously, it stood on the spina of Circus Maximus.

 .

At the foot of the staircase is a lovely early 1600’s Baroque fountain, “Fontanna della Barcaccio”, or “The Fountain of the Old Boat”, credited to Pietro Bernini, the father of the famous sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

 .

Afterward your visit to the Spanish Steps you will stop for a quick traditional Italian lunch at a local restaurant or trattoria.

.

Vatican Museums (Vatican)

.

THE VATICAN

.

Your next visit will be inside the smallest country in the world, the Vatican (also known as Vatican City).

.

Your first stop will be the Vatican Museums, where you will have the opportunity to admire the extensive and compelling collection of the world’s greatest masterpieces by well recognized including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Raphael, Perugino,  Giotto, Titian as well as a vast treasure of classical sculptures from antiquity.

 .

Among the most widely visited halls and galleries inside the Museums are the Gallery of Tapestries, Hall of Maps, the Raphael Rooms, the Pinacoteca with the grand finale stop inside the Sistine Chapel.

.

.

St Peter's Basilica (Vatican)

 .

.

The Basilica is also rich in stunning masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s impressive sculpture the Pieta, Bernini’s many accomplishments including the towering bronze canopy above the altar known as the Baldacchino, the glowing splendor of the Cathedra Petri (the throne of St Peter) and the elaborate Chapel of the Sacrament.

 .

TIPS FOR VISITING THE COLOSSEUM:

.

It’s advisable to bring a bottle of water and wear sunscreen during the warm months as it becomes quite hot and sunny inside the Colosseum. A hat to protect your head and to shade your face is also recommended.

.

A new security check point has been put in place at the Colosseum. This results in a potentially long waiting line to pass the security check. The line varies in length and wait times and is compulsory for all visitors, including those with pre-purchased tickets (no ticket line tickets).
.
To avoid excessive wait times and possibly missing other important sites due to Colosseum related delays, we suggest a 7:30 AM pick up at your ship.
.

TIPS FOR VISITING ROME'S FAMOUS SQUARES / PIAZZAS

.

The area around the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps can become very crowded during the peak travel months. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings close to you. Do not accept ‘gifts’ from street vendors approaching tourists around the squares.

.

TIPS FOR YOUR VATICAN VISIT

.

There is no dress code for visiting the Vatican Museums, but there is a modesty dress code imposed to enter the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica.

Please Read: How To Dress When Visiting Churches in Rome"

.

Please note that during the summer months it can get very hot inside the Vatican Museums and extremely crowded, which may or may not affect your overall experience during this visit.

 .

PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEOGRAPHY INSIDE VATICAN:

.

This is permitted throughout Vatican Museums, with the exception of sensitive areas where flash photography is forbidden. You may use flash photography and videography freely inside St Peter’s Basilica.

Any form of photography and videography are strictly forbidden inside the Sistine Chapel.

PRIVATE LICENSED TOUR GUIDES:

.

To get the most out of your visit to Vatican City, we highly recommend a professional tour guide as he or she will provide valuable information about the most significant works of art in the museums and St Peter’s Basilica, many of which you may miss without professional guidance.

.

The Vatican Museums is one of top three largest museums in the world with a vast network of galleries and halls that can be very confusing to a new visitor not accustomed to the labyrinthine interior.

.

Accompanied by a licensed tour guide allows you to take advantage of the convenient and time saving shortcut from the Sistine Chapel to St Peter’s Basilica.

.

It is at the discretion of the Vatican whether to allow visitors who are not accompanied by licensed tour guide to pass through this shortcut way. Please notify us in advance if you would like to reserve a private licensed tour guide because during peak travel season they get booked quickly.

 .

TIPS FOR VISITING ST PETER'S BASILICA:

.

Please remember to dress appropriately for the St Peter’s Basilica: no bare shoulders or bare knees permitted. Capri-type pants and over the knee skirts/dresses are acceptable for ladies, and men can over the knee shorts.
