COLOSSEUM SQUARE - admire the magnificent Ancient Roman architectural wonders

Your first stop will be Colosseum Square where you will have the opportunity to admire the imposing iconic symbol of Rome and testament to its imperial magnificence The Colosseum (Colosseo  in Italian).

The Flavian Amphitheater (as the Colosseum was originally named) was built in 72 AD by Emperor Vespasian who belonged to the Flavian dynasty. The amphitheater was built over the previous Emperor Nero’s opulent and enormous private residence the Domus Aurea (Golden House).

The name of the Flavian Amphitheater eventually evolved to just the Colosseum due to the "colossal" ancient bronze statue of Nero depicted as Apollo the pagan sun god that once stood in front of the amphitheater.

While strolling around Colosseum Square taking in the ancient Roman atmosphere, be sure to see the Colosseum from different angles and capture different views in postcard-perfect photos!

Next to the Colosseum, you will see the imposing Arch of Constantine, the ornate 4th century AD Victory Arch. Emperor Constantine is credited with legalizing Christianity in Rome.

CIRCUS MAXIMUS - the ancient Roman chariot race stadium

The Circus Maximus was the largest ancient Roman stadium ever built, primarily where dangerous chariot races took place for the pleasure of Roman citizens and royalty alike. On the spina (spine) in the center of the stadium that served as a dividing barrier, once stood Obelisco Flaminio, the obelisk that now graces the center of Piazza del Popolo.

Nothing but the outline remains of this Roman stadium, but you can imagine the grandeur of this structure that is considered an Ancient Roman wonder. The majestic backdrop behind the Circus Maximus is Palatine Hill where the villas of the emperors and Rome’s elite overlooked the city below.

CAPITOLINE HILL - with picture-perfect panoramic view of Roman Forum

From the terrace behind Capitol Hill (Campidoglio), you have a splendid picturesque view of the entire Roman Forum, a stunning portion of the Palatine Hill, and the Coliseum peering in the distance. This is also a very popular spot for great photos and group pictures, so make sure to bring your cameras!

On Post-Cruise Rome in A Day from Civitavecchia tour, you will see nearby the great Piazza Venezia which gives prominence to the palatial monument dedicated to the first king of Unified Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II.

Completed in 1935, the monument was built of fine white marble, and features grand stairways, lofty white Corinthian columns, elegantly sculpted fountains, a huge bronze equestrian sculpture of Vittorio Emanuele II in the center, and two statues of the pagan goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas (a chariot drawn by four horses abreast).

The monument also contains the tomb of  the WWI unknown soldier  with an eternal flame guarded around the clock by sentinels. 

PIAZZA NAVONA - Rome's charismatic square

Piazza Navona is a delightful oblong square with magnificent fountains embraced by earthy colored historic buildings.

Piazza Navona takes its unusual shape as well as its name from the ancient 1st century AD Roman stadium by Emperor Domitian that was used for athletic competitions. The square today rests directly on top of the interior arena of this ancient stadium. Over the ages, the name Navona evolved from the ancient word for games, ‘agones’.

The square centerpiece is the magnificent 17th century Fountain of Four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) by the legendary sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini.  This intricate fountain represents the four major rivers of the four known continents of that time: Nile (Africa), Danube (Europe), Ganges (Asia), and Rio de la Plata (America). Topping the fountain is an ancient Egyptian obelisk commissioned by Pope Innocent X.

PIAZZA DELLA ROTONDA - Rome's Historic Square

Step into the lively ambiance of Piazza della Rotonda, where the magnificent Pantheon and an extraordinary baroque fountain take center stage.  Crowned by a towering 20-foot Egyptian obelisk meticulously crafted by Pharaoh Ramses II for the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis, the fountain exudes an undeniable grandeur that will leave you awe-inspired.

Take a moment to pause and be captivated by the magnificence of the Pantheon, an architectural marvel that reigns supreme over the square. Its majestic presence effortlessly commands attention and evokes a sense of wonder.

Leisurely explore the square embraced by pastel-colored historical palazzi, meander around the Pantheon, marvel at the architectural wonders, and embrace the rich history and allure that this captivating square has to offer.

THE TREVI FOUNTAIN - Rome's most iconic Baroque fountain

The famous  Baroque Trevi fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome and probably the most recognized in the world. Thousands of visitors follow the long tradition of throwing a coin into the fountain to ensure a return to Rome.

The Trevi fountain was also the setting of the classic movie Three Coins in a Fountain and Federico Fellini's famous film La Dolce Vita.

SPANISH STEPS - admire the elegant staircase, a masterpiece in Rome
 

The iconic Spanish Steps boasts an elegant 18th-century winding stairway that takes you from the square below up to the French church of Trinita dei Monti.

The Obelisk Sallustiano at the top of the stairs is a smaller copy of the large original Egyptian obelisk that once belonged to Pharaoh Ramses II  which is currently the centerpiece of Piazza del Popolo, and previously, it stood on the spina of Circus Maximus.

At the foot of the staircase is a lovely early 1600s Baroque fountain, “Fontana della Barcaccio”, or “The Fountain of the Old Boat”, credited to Pietro Bernini, the father of the famous sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

After your visit to the Spanish Steps, you will stop for a quick traditional Italian lunch at a local restaurant or trattoria.

THE VATICAN - explore the art and treasures of Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel

Your next visit will be inside the smallest country in the world, the Vatican (also known as Vatican City).  

Your first stop will be the Vatican Museums, where you will have the opportunity to admire the extensive and compelling collection of the world’s greatest masterpieces by well-recognized including Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Raphael, Perugino,  Giotto, Titian as well as a vast treasure of classical sculptures from antiquity.
 

Among the most widely visited halls and galleries inside the Museums are the Gallery of Tapestries, Hall of Maps, the Raphael Rooms, the Pinacoteca with the grand finale stop inside the Sistine Chapel.

Pending available time, following your Vatican Museum Visit, your driver can take you near St Peter's Square to visit St Peter's Square.  Pending available time and length of security lines, you may have the opportunity to briefly visit St Peter's Basilica.

Our Post-Cruise Rome in A Day Tour from Civitavecchia provides a private tour with a tour Driver who is NOT also a Licensed Tour Guide.

Italy has strict laws to protect the integrity of licensed tour guides, prohibiting Tour Driver to act as a guide and accompany guests away from the vehicle. Your Tour Driver Guide will be obliged to remain with the vehicle while you SELF TOUR away from the vehicle.

For your safety inside the vehicle, drivers provide commentary only when it is considered safe to do so while driving. When your driver must concentrate during difficult driving conditions, please refrain from any distracting behavior as your safety during the tour is our top priority.

* Your Private Driver will drop you off as close to the sites as legally possible and in accordance with the Municipality and Traffic laws of Rome.

* If you are pleased with the service you receive from your Private Driver gratuity is customary in Italy.

LUGGAGE

Sedans priced for 1-2 passengers can accommodate up to 2 standard suitcases and up to 2 small carryons.

Minivans for up to 8 passengers can accommodate up to 6 suitcases and up to 6 carry-ons in TOTAL. If you anticipate bringing luggage in excess of what the standard 8-seater vans can accommodate, please inform us prior to booking this service so we can help ensure that everyone and their luggage will travel safely inside the vehicle.

Upon confirming the tour, you will be provided with LINKS and INSTRUCTIONS to purchase your  Vatican Museum Tickets in advance online via authorized websites.  You will be required to bring your Ticket VOUCHERS with you so they can be converted into actual tickets on-site.

These tickets are NON-REFUNDABLE once purchased the Vatican Museums do NOT issue refunds on purchased tickets of any kind.

St Peter's Basilica can only be visited from St Peter's Square pending available tour time and length of the queue to clear security.  Accessing the Basilica is not possible from inside the Vatican Museums without a Tour Guide.  Due to huge crowds resulting in delays during peak tourist season, a visit to the Basilica is NOT guaranteed.

MEETING POINT AT CIVITAVECCHIA CRUISE PORT

For Post Cruise Rome Tours from Civitavecchia, your private driver will meet you on the Pier next to your Ship at your scheduled pick-up time holding a sign with the NAME in your reservation.

Please do NOT leave the ship area, and do NOT take a shuttle bus outside the port.
