A leisurely drive from your hotel in Rome traversing the countryside into Tuscany will take you to your first destination: Montepulciano.
Montepulciano is a historic town with roots dating back to the ancient Etruscan civilization. Resting on the ridge of Monte Poliziano (from where the name Montepulciano derived from), and overlooking the magical Val di Chiana (Valley of Chiana) and Val d’Orcia, this is Tuscany at its finest!
Pedestrian-friendly medieval streets flanked by imposing architecture will lead you to many of Montepulciano’s treasures: local artisan shops, gastronomic boutiques, enoteche and wine cellars with plenty of opportunities to sample local wines.
Montepulciano is so famous for exceptional wine that it earned the title of “King of all Wines” by Francesco Redi, the famous 17th-century Italian poet, and physician in his poem, "Bacchus in Tuscany".
The Noble Wine of Montepulciano (Vino Nobile di Montepulciano) is a classic red preferred by aristocracy and royalty since Lorenzo de Medici in the 15th century.
This delightful wine has also been elevated to the prestigious DOCG status - Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita.
According to the very strict DOCG law, the wine must contain at least 70% Sangiovese grapes from vineyards surrounding Montepulciano, up to 20% Canaiolo grapes, and up to 20% other red grape variety.
Further, the wine is also required to be aged for two years in chestnut or oak barrels before being released. For the more refined “riserva” label, three years is required.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the most sought after Tuscan wines that has made its way to wine cellars and dinner tables world wide.
A relaxing Tuscan lunch can be enjoyed in Montepulciano, or you may choose to lunch in Pienza.
A short drive from Montepulciano will take you to the stunningly beautiful Pienza - a Renaissance utopia that revolutionized city planning, surrounded by breathtaking views of Valley of Orcia (Val d’Orcia).
Named after Pope Pius II who helped transform this once medieval village into a 15th century ideal urban city, Pienza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not surprisingly, also Val d’Orcia is a UNESCO World Cultural Landscape.
Adding to the town’s unforgettable charm are narrow lanes that lead you to the panoramic terrace on top of the city walls with romantic names likes Via dell’ Amore (Street of Love), and Via dell Baccio (Street of the Kiss).
Idyllic Renaissance and some older Medieval alleys lined with shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants add to the enchantment of this small town and make it a perfect town for a stroll.
For travelers with a discerning palate for gastronomic delights, Pienza’s other claim to fame is the local production of the finest pecorino cheese in Italy. Pecorino di Pienza is made from the milk of ewes that graze upon the lush pastoral grasslands that surround Pienza.
Delight your taste buds with pecorino fresco (soft fresh cheese) or pecorino stagionato (aged pecorino mixed with different subtle flavors) and discover these distinct traditional flavors in many of the local gastronomic boutiques throughout the town.
After a day exploring the flavors and beauty of Tuscany on this Montepulciano and Pienza Tuscan Tour, you will enjoy a relaxing drive through the picturesque countryside back to Rome where your driver will take you directly to your hotel.

Great Service, as Usual!
We’ve been using RomeCabs for 13 years; airport and train station transfers, as well as tours. This May, we did the Montepulciano and Pienza tour, which was beautiful, and the Herculaneum/Sorrento tour, which was fascinating. The vehicles are new and comfortable and the drivers are friendly and capable. Highly recommend for a stress-free day trip!
